Discover new ways to create and conceptualize. In this class we will explore materials and mark making, experimenting with unconventional tools. Searching for how to maintain our gestural hand in various mediums and scale, we ask the question who or what is leading the exploration? Is the medium, the concept or our own intuitive voice leading the way?

Discovering the Self: Exploration in Self-Portraiture

Discover and delight in the exploration of who you are. The self-portrait represents the whole artist, not only who you see, but what you feel. Through observation and prompted exercises, we will explore ways to examine our features using a mix of materials and techniques, from contour drawing, sumi ink painting, watercolor washes and more.

An Illustrated Life: Art Journaling

Explore art journaling and the personal narrative with the freedom and flow to tell your story. We will create a bound book for mixed media tests and samples to understand your materials, learning the basics in color theory. In a larger journal we will discover our individual uniqueness with prompted exercises, writing, painting, and collaging.

An Introduction to Encaustics: Working with Hot Wax

Explore the art of hot wax. Receive hands-on introduction in the encaustic process with a focus on safe studio practices. Demonstrations will be provided for basic techniques in painting, collage and relief. We will create surfaces both smooth and textured using a variety of tools.
